Importance of Preventative Care
“If you are new to our community, or if you need to establish routine care with a comprehensive dentistry practice, please contact us today and schedule your first checkup.”
Regular professional teeth cleanings remove plaque and bacteria that at-home brushing and flossing cannot. By visiting us every six months, we can help you achieve a clean slate of oral health.
Plaque is a sticky, colorless substance that contains bacteria. When sugary and starchy foods such as soft drinks, fruit juices, breads, pasta, cakes, candy, crackers, and chips mix with the saliva in your mouth, it produces acids that can lead to tooth enamel erosion. If brushing and flossing fail to completely eliminate plaque, it can result in tooth decay on the surfaces of the teeth, below the gum line, and between teeth.
Even those who are dedicated to brushing twice and flossing at least once every day can experience plaque buildup in hard-to-reach places. Preventative care can help you maintain your oral health for a lifetime.
What to Expect during a Dental Cleaning and Exam
During a dental cleaning and examination, a dental hygienist will use either a hand scaler or ultrasonic dental technology to remove plaque buildup from your teeth. Next, she will floss between and around your teeth to remove any remaining food particles or other debris.
Using an abrasive toothpaste and motorized polisher, she will clean your teeth to give them a smooth finish. For minor to moderate dental staining, she may recommend teeth whitening treatment. Fluoride treatment and dental sealants can also be provided to help prevent tooth decay.
Your doctor will then perform digital x-rays for a more comprehensive assessment of your oral health. He will examine your teeth, gums, jawbone, neck and head, checking for signs of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, bruxism, oral cancer, malocclusion, and any signs of infection. An oral cancer screening will also be conducted using advanced technology.
If tooth decay is detected, we will schedule another appointment in which the decayed tissue will be removed and replaced with a dental filling to restore the integrity and aesthetics of your tooth. We can also provide periodontal therapy to treat gum disease.
